Immediate resignation (no-notice) letter
Sometimes people resign effective immediately — for safety, health, or other urgent reasons. This guide covers careful wording and what to check first. It is not legal advice; contracts and (AU) awards may still require notice or allow deductions.
How to handle an immediate resignation letter
- Check your documents — contract, handbook, or AU award/enterprise agreement for notice rules and any pay implications.
- State the effective date clearly — “effective today” or the exact final day.
- Keep reasons short — or omit personal detail; offer a handover if you can.
- Deliver in writing — letter or email to manager and HR; keep a copy.
Sample immediate resignation wording
Dear Ms. Rivera, Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from my position as Operations Coordinator at Northbridge Solutions Inc., effective immediately (16 October 2026). I will return company property today and am available briefly to share status notes on open tasks. Thank you for the opportunity to work with the team. Sincerely, Jordan Lee
When people use no-notice resignations
- Workplace safety or harassment concerns (seek appropriate support)
- Sudden health or family emergencies
- Employer already ending the relationship the same day
If you can give notice, prefer a two weeks’ notice letter. Managers responding to a resignation may need an acceptance letter.
US & AU caution
US at-will employment still often expects professional notice culturally. In Australia, failing to give required notice can sometimes affect final pay — confirm with Fair Work guidance or an adviser. This site does not give legal advice.

Is immediate resignation the same as job abandonment?
No. Immediate resignation is a written statement that you are ending employment as of a stated date. Job abandonment usually means stopping work without communicating. Always put the resignation in writing.
Should I still offer a handover?
If you can, yes — even a short status email helps. If you cannot, say you will return property and provide contact details for urgent questions.
Can I use the free template for no-notice wording?
Yes. Open the template, set last day to today, and shorten the notice paragraph to “effective immediately.”
